Do I have time for
The Externship?
How to Make The Externship work for you.
There is a place for you (and your schedule) in The Externship.
The Externship has a time commitment of about 20 hours per week…but don’t let that scare you! There are so many ways to fit The Externship into your schedule.
Meet four of our most common types of Externs to see how they incorporate The Externship into their busy lives on a Thursday during The Externship.
Our Twilight Trailblazer has a 9-5, so he’s hustling to get The Externship done during the 5-9.
5 – 6:30 a.m.
Wake up early to watch the recording of yesterday’s Live Office Hours with a Guest Expert at 1.5 speed
7:30 a.m.
During the drive to work, listen to part 3 of 5 of this week’s Real Client Meeting and Hannah’s meeting commentary. All the course material is posted at the beginning of each week, so listening to one section during the morning commute has become his daily routine.
11 a.m.
Take an early lunch to join the Live Technology Support Hour. This week, a rep from Asset Map is giving a tutorial so Externs know how to do their homework assignment using the software.
5:30 p.m.
Listen to the recording of the second of three Guest Experts this week during the commute home.
7 p.m.
It’s Thursday night, and that means Live and Late, the casual Thursday evening online meetup of Externs, Hannah, and other special guests.
9:30 p.m.
Work on this week’s homework.
After seven years of staying home with young children, our Naptime Navigator’s youngest is headed to kindergarten next year, and she’s ready to return to the workforce. She’s squeezing in The Externship between naps, after bedtime, and during episodes of Bluey.
5 – 6:30 a.m.
Wake up early to watch Hannah’s homework walkthrough and check it against her homework.
1 p.m.
Watch recordings of this week’s LIVE sessions and Expert Sessions, including the 11 a.m. LIVE tech session, which is already ready to view online.
3 p.m.
Taking a cue from Bluey’s mom who is killing it as an airport security officer, it’s time to dive back into some work. Right now she’s reviewing her Asset Map assignment and watching the client meeting on 1.5 time. She didn’t quite get finished with her work for today, but plans to squeeze in a few hours on Saturday when the kids go to a birthday party.
9 p.m.
The house is finally quiet, and she’s had to miss the Live and Late meetup. Instead, she’s jumping on the forums to catch up with her CFP Exam study group and to see what the Extern alumni-led book club has picked for their next read.
Maybe she’s between jobs or doing The Externship for part of her internship at a firm, but our daytime devotee spends about half her workday on The Externship. That means she gets to catch all the LIVE sessions and ask questions.
9 a.m.
After binging all five client meetings earlier this week, she’s spending this morning taking the client meeting quiz and writing her meeting reflection assignment. All these homework pieces are required to be completed for her to be an official Externship finisher.
11 a.m.
Catch the LIVE Technology Support Hour. This week’s topic is Asset Map, and she’s looking forward to learning how to dive deep into the program after exploring it on her own yesterday.
1 p.m.
With three experts every week, she’s decided to space them out so she can absorb all of the wisdom, advice, and financial planning philosophies they impart. Today she’s listening to Dr. Brandy Baxter talk about Cash Flow planning.
7 p.m.
It’s Thursday night, and that means it’s time to grab a glass of chardonnay and jump into Live and Late to chat with her fellow externs.
On a regular week, our Holiday Halter would be doing his usual Externship schedule, but this week he’s on vacation with his family. Rather than trying to figure out how to get internet reception high in the Colorado mountains, he’s spending quality time with his family.
He’s not stressed about missing a week of The Externship because there are four extra weeks between the end of The Externship in July and the due date for coursework in August. He’s already made a plan to tack on this week’s work to the first week of August. So on this particular Thursday, he plans to take a hike, and later stargaze with his kids.
